Guide: Manage Utility Meters

How to manage meters in Backpack after account creation

One of the main features of Backpack is the ability to pull in utility data and push that data to a Backpack Administered Energy Star Portfolio Manager account.

Now, customers can also manage meters within Backpack which allows you to:

1. Add custom names to meters - like "Main Building Meter", "Parking Garage lighting Meter", "Irrigation Meter", etc.

2. Review all the active and inactive meters in Backpack and see quickly what is sync'ed to Energy Star

3. Quickly see the last bill received across all utility services

You can access this data in our new "MANAGE METERS" Section on the Utilities page.

To Navigate to Meter Management:

STEP 1: From the home page search for the building you would like to view

STEP 2: Navigate to the 'UTILITIES' page, and scroll down to select the black 'MANAGE METERS' button. A new window will open displaying active and inactive meters.

STEP 3: In the pop-up there are two tabs "Active Meters" & "Inactive Meters".  Active meters are connected to the Energy Star Portfolio Manager  Account.  Inactive meters are not connected to any Energy Star Portfolio Manager Account.

On each tab of the pop-up the following information is displayed:

  • One row for every meter associated with the building.
  • The meter number and special naming convention (if no name is entered the meter number will appear twice.)
  • The last date a bill was received (last observed date.)

Screenshot 2024-03-26 at 4.17.13 PMSTEP 4: To update the special naming convention for the meter or other information simply hover over the row and click on the edit button to the left of each row.

In this view, Users can edit the Meter Name to reflect more information about the meter.  For example, if the electric meter displayed below is for the main building, we would change the "METER NAME" field to "Main Building Meter" and click SAVE.  This meter will now show in the main list as both the meter number and special name.

You can also add notes on this pop-up.  The note field is for customer use in whatever way you see fit.  Some ideas for notes are: actual location, access details, install date or repair date, etc.

The other fields in this view are not editable by users because they are directly connected to the sync with Energy Star Portfolio Manager.  If something else needs to be updated please contact your Customer Success Manager or our support team at support@backpacknetworks.com.
