Setting the Stage

Some customers come to Backpack with an existing Energy Star Portfolio Manager account (ESPM) that they must maintain for reasons beyond their control.  These reasons might include:

  1. They are not the property data administrator and can not authorize a change to a new ESPM
  2. The existing account has too many external connections to make a change
  3. The account does not belong to their organization - someone else administers it (like a consultant or ownership/third party firm)

We understand this happens and are happy to work with you in this situation.  There are a few ways to handle this:

1. No changes are made to the ESPM, the customer simply retrieves Backpack data and loads it manually into their ESPM

2. Backpack connects to this ESPM so data currency & scoring shows up in Backpack but does not send data to ESPM

3. Backpack creates a new ESPM that is maintained  fully by Backpack & is fully automated so there's no customer intervention needed (preferred)

We prefer a Backpack Automated ESPM (more on that HERE) because it takes the burden off the customer to maintain the ESPM.  We like to say that by using Backpack you never have to login to Energy Star Portfolio Manager again!
