Energy Star Data Page

Staying on top of Energy Star is easy with Backpack! You can connect multiple Portfolio Manager Accounts, storing historic submission data & benchmark scores in one spot

Basic Energy Star Information

The Energy Star Page displays a ton of information about the building's Energy Star data.  Information includes:

  • Energy Star Certification status
  • Current score
  • Information on Last Certification (where applicable)
  • Visualized monthly energy data (gas and electric) completion
  • Portfolio Manager detail data on an annual basis by property use type

Energy Star Portfolio Manager Account Ownership

Most of the time, the data shown in the Backpack is attached to the Backpack Administered Energy Star Account, created during onboarding.

In very rare circumstances the Backpack can be attached to an account that is not administered by Backpack.  In those cases utility data is not sync'd to the Energy Star account and is managed by the customer.  Read more in the above article and reach out to our team with questions.

The Backpack Administered Energy Star account is fully supported by the Backpack software and syncs seamlessly with Energy Star Portfolio Manager. This account is created during onboarding & will be shared with the customer & approved contacts. You control who sees your data!

If there are multiple portfolio manager accounts for a building, the data in one of those accounts can also be pulled into the Backpack as a 'historical' view. This way you still have access to legacy data and also have the benefits of Backpack administering all your current data and Energy Star needs! No more logging into Portfolio Manager!

Accessing data in the Energy Star Page

  1. Select a building, and navigate to 'SUBMISSIONS' in the left-hand navigation menu.
  2. Select 'ENERGY STAR'.
  3. The page will load displaying the current Energy Star data.

💡If you were to login go Energy Star Portfolio Manager you would see the same information but will have to poke around for it.  Here in Backpack the information is easy to view and understand.

Details on each section of the page:

  • Energy Star Certification Status:

If you have at least 12 months of data the top bar will display:

    • The number of points needed to get to 75 & tips on how to get there

    • A congratulatory message prompting the user to pursue certification

    • A salute to the currently certified building letting the user know there's nothing to do at this time.  At least 10 months must elapse between certifications so if you are certified already, the Backpack team will reach out when it's time to re-certify.

  • Current Score

The current score displayed represents the score reflected in Energy Star. This score can change very quickly as bills arrive, issues are resolved, etc.  This is the most up to date score and could be considered "real-time."  If no score is present the most likely cause is that there are not 12 consecutive months of electric and gas data in your Backpack.  Contact our utilities team to work on resolving this error message at utilities@backpacknetworks.com

  • Visual of Monthly energy data

Each of the past 12 months is represented along with a checkmark or an x showing if the data is complete.  This data ties directly to the Utilities page.  If you aren't sure about the data check there first, perhaps a bill is delayed or not processed yet.  Questions can be directed to our utilities team at utilities@backpacknetworks.com

It is possible to have only 11 months of data showing and still have a current score. For example, if the visual shows 11 months of checks & the final month as a red x, the month preceding the 12 months shown was complete and is being used in the score.

  • Certified Score

If the building is Energy Star Certified currently or at any point in the past the last certification will display including the date and score at certification
  • Activity Logs

If you really want to see details, this is where they are!  This logs everything Backpack does to maintain your data!
  • Yearly Data Submissions

This section displays all the background detail associated with the building, direct from the Energy Star Portfolio Manager page.  Property use types are in tabs across the top.  Click into each tab to see details such as:
    • Building Name & Address
    • SQFT including changes over the years
    • Occupants & Work stations
    • And more
  • Historical Data

If you have a legacy (old) Energy Star Account and worked with our team to bring that data into your Backpack, a "View Historical Data" button will be present just to the right of Yearly Data Submissions.  Click here to see all the same details from your legacy account. This is a great way to keep both old and new data in one place.
💡Add your sustainability consultant as a user to Backpack so they can access all this data and the Backpack team of experts.  This avoids duplicate work and saves everyone time and money!

What if I need to change some of the building data?
